Tactical Assault Gear Bulletproof Vest TAG’s® Vanguard plate carrier sets the standard in the industry for what a plate should be. The Vanguard is a light weight plate carrier that works with any set of hard armor plates and soft armor backers. SAPI, ESAPI, XSAPI, standalone level 4, swimmer cut and shooter cut armor plates all fit into the Vanguard.

The triple magazine front panel is sewn into the carrier and will fit 30 round 5.56mm, AK47, and 7.62 x 51 magazines. You will never need to change out your magazine pouches again when using different weapon platforms.

Another unique feature the Vanguard has that separates it from all other plate carriers is the ability to swap out the cummerbund systems. TAG® has a licensing agreement with Crye Precision® for the use of the Skeletal cummerbund. You can choose from our standard cummerbund or choose the Skeletal, for the same price. The cummerbunds are fully adjustable and swapping them out is easy with our G Hook attachment system.

The Vanguard has built in padded and fully adjustable shoulder straps. The tops of the shoulder straps have both nylon webbing and elastic webbing for mounting and routing tourniquets, hydration tubes, radio antennas, handsets, comm wires, V Lites®, and strobe lights.

Spacer mesh is used on the inside of the Vanguard for increased breathability and comfort. Matching Velcro® loop covers the upper front and back portions of the carrier for any size Velcro® placards. Let’s get specific for a moment. The vest weighs in from 5.2-6.4 pounds depending on the size without the plates, and sells at a very low price of $299.The plates weigh in at 5.65 pounds apiece, and they sell at only $169.99 each. Now, you’re probably wondering how Bullet Safe can offer ESAPI quality plates at the price of a steel plate and a soft armor carrier for them at such an affordable rate.

Well like I said, these guys are a relatively new company and are marketing specifically to the basic security officer and the emergency prepared individual. The vest doesn’t cost as much as a higher end vest for several reasons. First, it’s written right on their website that Bullet Safe makes less profit on their products in order to offer the quality to the base end of the industry’s customers.

We have spoken to them in detail and they are working hard to even save $5.00 where they can. Second, the vest cover does not come with all the bells and whistles.

There are no quick releases, M.O.L.L.E. webbing, or anything fancy. It is a simple, comfortable platform that gets the job done without your wallet taking a beating. Also, though it isn’t exactly a feather weight vest that you may be able to get from a higher end company, but, the vest doesn’t have a competitor’s price of $600-$800 either. Bullet Safe has really done a great job of matching quality with a more all around affordable price.

This vest offers multiple wearing styles. You can choose to wear it outside your clothing with or without the plates inserted for protection on the job, or it is slim and comfortable enough to wear under your uniform or outer shirt.

Finally, let’s say you’re one of those guys that want to have the option of having the extra protection of plates but you don’t necessarily want or need to wear them all day. An easy solution would be to wear the soft armor vest while on patrol and if the need for that extra protection arises, simply have the plates staged in a separate plate carrier and slip it on.

Or, if you are wearing the vest as an outer, simply slip the plates in the pocket. This allows you to never have to leave the protection of your armor while still adding more protection to meet or exceed the threat. This is one vest we definitely recommend.

Protection Rating

A Class IIIA vest can protect against almost all handgun rounds. IIIA vests (ours included) are tested with bullets up to a .44 Magnum, and will protect against smaller rounds as well. Bullet Safe is quite comfortable in saying that a class IIIA vest will protect you from almost any handgun you will encounter and certainly any handgun that someone conceals.

No vest will protect against every bullet, and a IIIA vest won’t protect against heavy rifle fire without added armor plates. Bulletproof vests do not stretch, and do not have to contain your shoulders so you cannot order them the same way that you order a t-shirt.
